Year 1 World Book Day, by Mrs GIlmour
Date: 14th Mar 2025 @ 12:47pm
Last week we celebrated world book day with lots of fun activities! We listened to the author Julia Donaldson read us a story and the illustrator Axel Scheffler showed us how to draw some of his famour characters too. We also had a week of mystery readers. Our grown ups from home came into the classroom and suprised us by reading us one of their favourite stories, thank you for sharing them with us!
On world book day we dressed up as our favourite book characters. We drew a picture of our characters and described them using adjectives. We also went for a trip to Stretford library. The children found it very funny taking their teachers (Elphaba and Glinda) to the library! They listened to a story and read independently too. Their behaviour was fantastic on the walk to and from the library and also on our visit, well done year 1 and we enjoyed seeing all of you in your fancy dress outfits last Thursday too :) Keep up the super reading at home!
Year 1 end of year celebration, by Mrs GIlmour
Date: 11th Jul 2024 @ 5:24pm
Year 1 went out of school this week to celebrate the fantastic year we have had! We used the attendance money they raised throughout the year to treat the children to a fun day at Let Loose soft play centre in Sale. They had so much fun decorating cupcakes, choosing a book from the free bookshop, playing in the soft play area and enjoying pizza and chips for lunch with a rocket ice lolly in the picnic area to end the day. I think they enjoyed racing their teachers down the slides the most and I'm sure they were very tired once they got home!
Year 1- Food Tech: Fruit Kebab, by Mrs GIlmour

Year 1- History, by Mrs GIlmour
Date: 28th Jun 2024 @ 4:09pm
In Year 1 we are exploring holidays from the past and compared them to present day holidays. We discussed how people like to collect souvenirs on holiday as a memory. The children brought in their own souvenirs such as fridge magnets, pencils, t-shirts, keyrings, postcards and photos. We then created our own fridge magnets for a seaside holiday out of clay. We enjoyed making the most of the sunshine and doing this in the sun and then painting them. We hope they managd to stay in one piece at home!
Year 1 sport day, by Mrs GIlmour
Date: 21st Jun 2024 @ 12:22pm
Year 1 had a fantastic day yesterday celebrating sports day! The sun was shining and spirits were high as they cheered on their teams: Mandela, Parks, Pankhurst and Hawking. They had to complete a relay race, a balancing race and an obstacle race. The parents then had a race and the teachers had a fun race too! Thank you to all of our spectators who came to watch and gave a great community spirit towards the day.

This week Year 1 have been learning about common garden plants. They learnt that garden plants are planted on purpose and can be used to look pretty such as a pansy or used for food such as rosemary. We went for a walk around our local park and area spotting the garden plants on the way. We did observational drawings and found out the name of new plants.
Year 1 visit to Stretford Library, by Mrs GIlmour
Date: 8th May 2024 @ 3:41pm
This week the children visited Stretford Library. They walked their and back and passers by commented on their exceptional behaviour along the journey. When we went inside the library the children had a guided tour of the children's area of the library and the different sections they could choose a book from. They then had a tour of the adult library as well. They were then given the task of being book detectives and finding different books on their sheet such as 'find a book in a different language'. They had lots of fun and were then able to choose one book to borrow from the library as well.
Year 1- Julia Donaldson Exhibition, by Mrs GIlmour
Date: 26th Apr 2024 @ 2:15pm
In the Autumn term, year 1 went to the Lowry Theatre to visit the Julia Donaldson exhibition. We had been reading the story Stick Man and it was amazing to see Julia Donaldson's real draft books and ideas for how she created these stories. There was lots of interactive games, a reading area and a role play area, the classes had so much fun! We travelled by the tram to Salford which was another exciting (and tiring) part of the day too!
