Year 5: Blog items

Mind mapping , by Mrs Grainger

Date: 30th Apr 2018 @ 1:57pm

Year 5RG are currently finishing their mind maps about the religions they have been learning about this year. They are hard at work finding the information from their books to add to what they already know. We will be using these to design our own religious building, before writing a newspaper report.

USA vs UK, by Mrs Grainger

Date: 30th Apr 2018 @ 12:30pm

The children showed excellent teamwork when researching about physical landmarks in the USA using iPads. I'm so impressed with how much you were able to find out in a relatively short amount of time. Well done everyone!

Holiday Homework, by Miss Lee

Date: 30th Apr 2018 @ 12:26pm

In 5L, the children are showing their amazing Greek Myth Holiday Homework creations.

Thank you to any parents who have helped at home!

They all look great! :)

Simple Machines, by Miss Lee

Date: 30th Apr 2018 @ 10:48am

In year 5 science, we have been learning about simple machines. We gave making our own simple machine a go. It proved to be quite tricky so will be finishing them off next science lesson.

Also in science, the children are planning their own Rube Golderberg machines. Watch this space for the updates!

Can you remember the 4 types of simple machines?

Our Group Presentations, by Miss Lee

Date: 30th Apr 2018 @ 9:39am

Year 5 have been very busy preparing for their History presentations where they must compare the Ancient Islamic Civilisation with the Vikings.

All their research has been conducted independently. As well as this, the group were able to choose how they would present their information.

We had time to watch two out of the five presentations. Well done for the first two groups for their hard work and courage. It's not easy talking in front of a large group. We were all very impressed!

Geography Maths Teamwork, by Miss Lee

Date: 30th Apr 2018 @ 9:31am

In Geography our topic is called UK vs USA!

We put our teamwork and maths skills to the test by figuring out what time we land in different places in the US, if we were to go on holiday there. The challenge was tricky, as they had to apply their knowledge of time zones as well as their maths skills to their task.

Well done 5L!

Kahoot, by Miss Lee

Date: 30th Apr 2018 @ 9:27am

Miss Lee's maths class had a lot of fun last week playing Kahoot. It helped me to see what the children already knew but it was also a fun way to teach new things! Did you enjoy it too?

Maths Treasure Hunt, by Mrs Richardson

Date: 27th Apr 2018 @ 4:00pm

Today in our maths lesson we worked in teams to find fractions, decimals and percentages that were hiding in and around our classroom. When we found them, we converted them and found the equivalents. Year 5 showed excellent teamworking skills combined with amazing mathematical knowledge. Well done!

Holiday Projects, by Mrs Richardson

Date: 27th Apr 2018 @ 3:55pm

Today we shared some of the amazing Greek Myth inspired projects that year 5 created over the holidays. Can you spot any characters you recognise from Greek Myths? A huge effort was made by those who took part and we are looking forward to sharing more of them soon!

Hot Seating, by Miss Lee

Date: 27th Apr 2018 @ 3:06pm

Michael, from the famous story 'Kensuke's Kingdom' visited 5L yesterday! The children were very excited to ask him interveiw questions.

Thank you Michael for visiting!

Earth Day, by Mrs Grainger

Date: 24th Apr 2018 @ 12:15pm

On Sunday, it was Earth Day.  It has been reported that plastic straws are going to be banned because there is too much plastic waste ending up in the sea. How are you reducing your plastic use in school and at home?  For example; you might be reusing water bottles instead of throwing them away, using paper straws instead of plastic, using reusable plastic bags or bags for life or wrapping your packed lunch in tinfoil instead of clingfilm.  We would love for you to let us know.

Diet Coke and Mentos Round 2, by Miss Lee

Date: 6th Feb 2018 @ 5:03pm

We tried the experiment again! Let's just say we were more disappointed the second time around than the first. Miss Lee and Mrs Richardson will do a bit of research around how to make the best reaction over half term and will give you the best fizzy explosion, which we promised to give you the first time! Any suggestions would be very helpful.

Respect, by Mrs Grainger

Date: 6th Feb 2018 @ 4:58pm

Year 5RG had the task of explaining what we believe the value of 'Respect' means in our school.  Take a look at our display to see what we thought everbody, both children and adults, should do.

5RG Outdoor Maths, by Mrs Grainger

Date: 6th Feb 2018 @ 4:57pm

The children in Mrs Richardson and Mrs Grainger's maths set went outdoors to practise practical measuring of area and perimeter.  We made predictions before measuring carefully with a trundle wheel.

Outdoor Maths Learning, by Miss Lee

Date: 6th Feb 2018 @ 4:56pm

Yesterday, 5L maths took their learning outdoors! We learnt the difference between reflection and translation of 2D shapes!

Diet Coke and Mentos Round 1, by Miss Lee

Date: 6th Feb 2018 @ 4:54pm

We have been looking at reversible and irreversible changes in Science. We attempted the mentos and coke experiment. Let's just say Miss Lee, Mrs Richardson and the Year 5 children were a little underwhelmed! We are going to try it again next week.
