Art- Stencils, by Miss McEvoy

As part of our patterns topic in Art we created our own stencils. We used these to then create patterns in our sketch books. We used the skills we had learnt last week to create different patterns; reflection, rotation and symmetry. After this we learnt about different ways to colour our pattern, we learnt about: cross hatching, shading and dotting. It was fun trying these different methods on our pattern.

As part of our Roman artefacts we decided to become archaeologists. We used the information we have learnt over the last 5 weeks to try and decipher what the artefacts were and then what the Roman's might have used them for.

In History we have been learning all about WW1 & 2. Recently, we learnt about rations and some different recipes they used. We decided to make some 'Digger biscuits'. The children were all fantastic helpers in our new food technology room and not only measured out all of the ingredients themselves but also cleaned up too!

Art- Investigating patterns, by Miss McEvoy

This half term our Art topic is all about patterns. We were all very excited to start using our new sketch books. To start our topic we discussed different patterns around us at school, at home and in nature. We then talked about what makes up a pattern, the most common answer was about shapes and repeating. We then looked at different artists who use patterns in their work; Piet Mondrian, Henri Mattise, Kandinsky, Keith Haring and Gustav Klimt. After discusing their art work we then choose 3 different patterns to recreate in our sketch book. We used colour to enhance our work.

Today Year 4 were using glokenspiel in their music lesson. we worked on timing and listening to the music to use our instruments to match.

To discover where the Roman Army conquered we used google earth to locate Rome and England. We found out how far they are araprt. Then we looked at a map to see how far the Roman army travelled.

Today Year 4 were investigating sound vibrations. We used instruments to test which part vibrates, when played, to create the vibration. After this we investigated volume. To do this we played the instrument in different ways to see what would affect the volume. 

History virtual lesson British Museum, by Miss McEvoy

This week Year 4 were very lucky to have a virtual lesson with the British Museum. We learnt all about Roman treasure. We learnt about the Treasure Act and how items are classified as 'treasure'. It was interesting to learn all about the different jobs that go into finding, researching and displaying treasure in museums. 

Science - Plants, by Miss Jones

In Science, we have been learning all about plants. To begin our topic we identified and classified the different plant parts which we learnt in KS1. We then moved on to learning the roles for the different parts of the plant. We came up with some actions to help us remember these we also played a match up game where we matched the part of the plant to their role. We visited our 'vocabulary' station and had a go at learning our new Tier 3 words and their definitions by saying these to our friends.  We then moved on to learning about Water Trasnportation, to demonstarte this we conducted an investigation with celary, water and food colouring, and observed over time. Finally, we played quiz, quiz, trade to learn lots of new facts and information.

We have been looking at Number and Place Value. We have been using concrete resources and outdoor learning to help us with our Maths and to help us recap some of the objectives which we learnt in Key stage 1. 

History - The Stone Age, by Miss Jones

We began our Stone Age topic by taking a virtual tour of The Stonehenge, we then created silhouette painting of The Stonehenge. We also used charocal and oil pastels to create our very own cave paintings! We have also been looking at what a Primary and a Secondary source is and why these are useful. We did some Outdoor Learning, categorising different sources on whether they were a Primary or a Secondary source, we then went on to look at different periods of History and locate The Stone Age on a timeline. We disucssed what chronological order meant and why this is important. Finally, we had a go at ordering a timeline of World History noticing the dates, beginning to understand what BC and AD stand for.

Goalball UK, by Miss Horvath

Goalball UK visited our class today and took some children to take part in the sport alongside Lyla, our Y5 child with a visual impairment. The game is designed specifically for people with a visual impairment and was developed for blind veterans. All participants are blindfolded and have to use their other senses to block the ball. It was so much fun for them all!

Year 5 had a fantastic trip yesterday to Castleton, the Peak District. They went deep underground, taking the boat through Speedwell Cavern. They also had a walk (HIKE!) up to Peveril castle where the views were beautiful.
