In English, we are currently looking at Explanation texts, this week we have been focusing on learning about their different features. The children were given an Explanation text and had to pick out specific terminology from the text and then as a group create a large glossary, this helped us to understand the purpose of a glossary.
Half Term Homework, by Miss Jones
Date: 1st Nov 2018 @ 5:27pm
The Year 5 half term project was linked to our topic in Geography, ‘Our Country. Children were able to present their information in any way they liked. Here were their two options:
- CREATIVE – You can put your creative skills to work by creating a 3D model of a famous landmark in London. E.g. Big Ben, London Eye or Tower Bridge out of Lego/papier-mâché/boxes/clay.
- WRITING- Create an information leaflet (or a PowerPoint) about the history of The Olympic Games. Try to include information about the 2012 London Olympic Games. You could watch clips of the opening ceremony to help you.
Miss Jones and Mrs McEvoy were amazed with how much time and effort all of the children had put in to their projects, everyones project was unique and creative - Well done Year 5!!
Forgiveness, by Mrs McEvoy
Date: 12th Oct 2018 @ 4:40pm
Last week, as part of our RE topic, we learnt about 2 different parables which showed Jesus' teaching on forgiveness. We acted out the 2 parables; The Parable of the Two Debtors Luke 7: 36-50 and The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant Matthew 18:21-35. We then linked this back to our own lives and thought about why forgiveness is important.
Which situation did you feel would have been harder to forgive and why?

Drama, by Miss Jones
Date: 12th Oct 2018 @ 4:23pm
In our English lesson, we had a special visit from Clunk, who joined us for a Drama lesson. We talked about the Myths and Legends which we have been learning about this half term. We used clapping patterns during our warm up to clap out the characters names. We then looked at hot seating and imitating Bilbo and Gandalf from The Hobbit, we had to guess the character who our friend was acting out, focusing on their feelings. We also discussed how to be respectful to our ‘character’ and why this was important.
King Vortigern, by Mrs McEvoy
Date: 21st Sep 2018 @ 4:26pm
Today we learnt about King Vortigern. We listened to the story about him, Hengist and Horsa. We ranked the reasons why Anglo-Saxons came to Britain. We then wrote a mini speech, in small groups, about whether we thought Vortigern was a good or bad person. We presented our speeches to the class and then we all made our final decision. Our aim was to persuade people to switch to what we thought. After this, we explained why Vortigern's decision (to let Anglo-Saxons come to Britain) was siginificant and discussed how it chanegd Britain.
Did you think Vortigern was a good or bad king?
Our topic class discussion!, by Miss Jones

Heliocentric and Geocentric, by Mrs McEvoy
Date: 21st Sep 2018 @ 1:07pm
In Science this week we have learnt all about how our knowledge of the solar system has developed through the decades. We learnt about the Heliocentric and Geocentric models. After this, we focused on 2 scientists in particular; Aristotle and Galileo. We worked as groups to create a speech to show what these men contributed to our understanding of our solar system.
What is the difference between the Heliocentric and Geocentric models?
Which scientist believed in the Heliocentric model?
Solar Systems, by Mrs McEvoy
Date: 14th Sep 2018 @ 4:45pm
After learning about the Solar System last week, we made our own! We found different items to represent the different planets. Then we made sure we represented the distance and the size accuractly.
What did you find the most interesting from this lesson? Which part of making the Solar System was the trickiest?
Coke and Mentos - TAKE 3, by Miss Lee
Date: 19th Jul 2018 @ 4:46pm
IT FINALLY WORKED!
What we learnt: the reaction between coke and mentos is better if it is warm! This is because heat speeds up reactions.
Science is brilliant!
Salad Making, by Miss Lee
Date: 19th Jul 2018 @ 4:41pm
As part of food tech this year, Year 5 designed and made a salad that follows the balanced diet. We discussed the best foods to fill someone, as well as give them enough energy to keep them going until tea time!
The best part was the eating! They all looked so delicious.

Parts of a Flower - how seeds are made, by Miss Lee
Date: 19th Jul 2018 @ 4:38pm
Following on from our science lesson, where seeds in a plant form, the children learnt aboutthe different parts of a flower as well as how plants reproduce.
This was an awful lot of information for them to process, so Mrs Grainger and I made it arts and crafty! The children learnt the parts and process, then using card, had to make a "puppet show" using the various pieces of card to show the class how a plant reproduces.
It was some high level stuff but lots of knowledge was gained in the classroom. The children produced some wonderful flower diagrams as well as using the correct scientific vocabulary when explaining how a plant produce eggs. Well done Year 5!
Wonderful Words, by Miss Lee
Date: 19th Jul 2018 @ 4:29pm
Last week in English, the children were all excited about the wonderful words they found in setting descriptions. Analysing setting descriptions, picking out specific language features, as well as using a quote for an example, was a very high level activity, showing how far the children have come since the beginning of Year 5! So proud of everyone's progress!
PDSA Visit, by Miss Lee
Date: 19th Jul 2018 @ 4:26pm
Thank you for the veterinary nurse, Rose, who told us all about her exciting job working at an animal hospital! There were a few inspired animal lovers after the talk!
Levi Tafari poetry event, by Mrs Richardson
Date: 18th Jul 2018 @ 4:07pm
We were lucky to have a visiting poet in Year 5 last Thursday. Levi Tafari is a Liverpool based poet who came to perform some of his own work and then work with us to create fantastic poems about Manchester and diversity. The children were really inspired by Levi and generated lots of ideas about their home city. To top it off, year 5 and 6 had a visit from the Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham and were able to share their poems with him. He was very touched with the ideas portrayed in the poetry and the pride in Manchester.
The wonder of words, by Mrs Grainger
Date: 10th Jul 2018 @ 9:47am
This morning, in English, we have been reading a range of setting descriptions. Our challenge was to draw what we thought the setting looked like, based on the author's choice of words. Take a look at them, they're fantastic! There is some inspiring vocabulary too. We're busy choosing our favourites. I can't wait to read your descriptions using some of these amazing new words. Mrs Nunwick, I think we might need to order some more post it notes!
STEM week artist, by Mrs Richardson
Date: 29th Jun 2018 @ 4:34pm
We were lucky enough to have Lucy Burscough (Alfie's mum) to come in and do a workshop with us during STEM week. Lucy combines an interest in science with her art practice. The children learnt about colour blindness and how it effects different people. Thank you Lucy!
Stop Motion Animation - STEM WEEK DAY 3, by Miss Lee
Date: 28th Jun 2018 @ 4:21pm
We had so much fun on Wednesday creating stop motion animation videos. They turned out fantastic. See some pictures of the filmakers in action!

Date: 28th Jun 2018 @ 4:19pm
On Tuesday, the children lots of fun building towers with midget gems and cocktail sticks.
First we analysed successful tall buildings, then the children tried to magpie these. There was lots of communication, team work, evaluation and strategy involved. Well done Year 5!
RSPB Workshop and Habitats - STEM WEEK DAY 2, by Miss Lee
Date: 28th Jun 2018 @ 4:13pm
Sam, who works for the RSPB, came to our school to carry out a workshop based on habitats.
The session allowed the children to explore the school ground to evaluate the habitats it provides.
We found lots of areas, bushes and habitats that we previously did not know existed. Sam even said our school provides excellent habitats for different animals and insects. Just need a pond to make it one of the best! Hopefully that is something to ask for in the future.
Biscuit Dunking - STEM WEEK DAY 1, by Miss Lee
Date: 28th Jun 2018 @ 4:06pm
On Monday, in the great British style, the children conducted an experiment about a matter that affects all of our lives, and something we, as Brits, have been pondering for years but never had time to test. Yes. We tested which biscuit was the best 'dunker'. And by great shock of the children, and Miss Lee, the winner was... RICH TEA?!
It was the clear winner. One Rich Tea witheld over 50 dunks.
Well there you have it. The best dunker is the Rich Tea biscuit. I still think it's Hobnob so if we ever do it again Year 5, I'll be brining a packet of them in.
STEM WEEK DAY 1 - STRETFORD GRAMMAR, by Miss Lee
Date: 27th Jun 2018 @ 12:47pm
Thank you to Streford Grammar and the 6th Form students who taught us how to collect evidence if a crime happened.
We studied REAL human bones. We had to wash our hands lots, after handling them! The different features of bones gave us clues to work out if the bones belonged to a male or female as well as many other clues!
The children also collected DNA, looked at fibres under a microscope, took footprint moulds and finger prints.
It was so much fun!
STEM week, by Mrs Grainger
Date: 27th Jun 2018 @ 11:12am
What a fantastic week it has been so far! On Monday, we walked to Stretford Grammar School to take part in some Forensic Science activities. The children had a great time using microscopes to look closely at fibres, extracting DNA, observing real bones, taking fingerprints and making impressions of shoe prints.
On Tuesday, we were lucky enough to have the RSPB come in to talk to us about habitats. We looked at our school grounds with a fresh pair of eyes and realised that we have far more habitats and micro habitats than we first realised!
We ended our day with making the tallest tower we could out of cocktail sticks and midget gems. Exciting stuff! There was a lot of nervous tension in the room when it came time to see if they would actually stand unaided!
This morning, we have been working in groups to create stop motion animations. I can't wait to see how they turn out!
Food Tasting!, by Miss Lee
Date: 19th Jun 2018 @ 4:40pm
It's been a full, exciting day in Year 5. As part of our market research, the children needed to taste some food. Their task: Make a filling salad for Miss Lee's lunch so it is healthy, but filling enough to enable her to last, with energy, until 3:30!
We wanted to see the which were the best flavours, as well as presentation of salads. We discussed and tried different salads, such as: Greek salad, bean salad and tomato and mozzerella salad.
It was fun, tasty but allowed us to be sure what we want in our salad design to fulfil the task set to us.
Next lesson, we will explore which types of foods are the healthiest, while providing Miss with Lee the most amount of energy.
